A few years ago, I launched this website unsure of how it would be received. I was stepping into an unfamiliar world, sharing a deeply personal story in the hope it might resonate with others who had faced similar heartbreak. Little did I know, there were countless others who had experienced the pain of losing a loved one to Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
Since the launch, over 150 people have reached out to share their stories or inquire about the process for submitting their experiences. Some offered glimpses into their lives, while others entrusted me with their full journey. Before posting any story, I always ensure the contributor has an opportunity to review and approve it. This practice fosters trust and respect within our community.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been staying in touch with many contributors. I’ve discovered that a significant number of them have channeled their grief into advocacy, working tirelessly to prevent other families from enduring the same pain. By helping others, they have found healing—emotionally, spiritually, and beyond. Their courage and determination continue to inspire me.
If you or someone you know has been impacted by this disease, I encourage you to share your story. Whether it’s a narrative of loss or a celebration of recovery, every story matters. Substance Use Disorder does not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, religion, age, or sexual orientation. We are all united in this shared struggle. By stepping out from under the shadow of stigma and shame, we can find healing—both for ourselves and for others.
Together, in our own small but meaningful ways, we can contribute to healing the world. Let’s continue to lift each other up, one story at a time.
